10 Hair Care Myths Exposed
From unrealistic hair growth adverts to online home remedies promising to transform your hair overnight, there are plenty of hair care myths and false marketing ruses out there, which we think it's about time we clear up. People also make their own presumptions about hair care, particularly around Shampoo and Conditioner bars, so we want to set the record straight once and for all.
1. Belief: Shampoo Bars don't work as well as bottled products
Wrong! They’re formulated to be BETTER than bottles: we use a much gentler cleanser than most bottled products, so our bars don't strip your hair, the bars are packed with natural oils, and don't have parabens or silicones, which coat hair and weigh it down.

Unlike bottled products, KinKind shampoo and conditioner bars aren't made up of 80% water. Our ingredients are more concentrated than bottles, which is why we often get customer reviews affirming that their hair feels cleaner and doesn't need to be washed as frequently.
2. Buying More Sustainably Is Expensive
Not Quite! KinKind shampoo and conditioner bars don’t cost the earth, and when stored correctly, they are really good value for money. As the ingredients in our shampoo and conditioner bars are super concentrated (remember, bottled shampoo/conditioner are 80% water), you will find you only need to use a tiny amount. Just one or two swipes/rubs with the shampoo bar and you get a rich lather.
Occasionally, we are asked for help by customers when they are first using our bars, and normally, they are using too much shampoo and not rinsing out fully. They then let us know they have successfully switched and how little they are using for great results.
3. Your Hair Goes Through A Transition Period When Switching To Shampoo Bars
False! When you switch from one shampoo to another, or you delve into the world of solid shampoo & conditioner bars, it will either work immediately, or it doesn't work for your hair type. This is due to the pH of hair and the way the bars are formulated. Some bars in the market do need a transition period of about 2 weeks, but when switching to KinKind shampoo & conditioner bars, you can confidently switch from Day 1 because our bars are formulated to work naturally with your hair type.
Additionally, certain ingredients found in bottled products often leave a coating on your hair, making it feel greasy and limp, and requiring washing more frequently. When our consumers switch to KinKind Bars, they soon realise they don't have to wash their hair as often, so their bar actually lasts longer than bottled shampoos & conditioners.
4. Belief: Natural Ingredients Aren’t As Effective As “Scientific” Ones
Not True! There’s a strange idea that if you can’t pronounce or recognise a word in the ingredients, then it must be bad for you, but that’s absolutely not the case. In health and beauty, effective and natural products start with good formulation, not toxic and mysterious chemicals.
KinKind bars are made with plant-derived and scientifically chosen natural ingredients, coconut oil, cocoa butter, rice protein, rosemary and seaweed extracts to deliver actual benefits without needing to touch any harsh chemicals, and cater to the many varieties of hair types that all have completely different needs. We do, however, make an effort to avoid the nasty chemicals, ensuring our products are plastic-free, silicone-free, and cruelty-free, making sure that we deliver top-class, natural products without cutting any corners or adding in any nasties!

5. Belief: Conditioner Bars Are Heavy And Leave Residue
Nope! One thing you need to know about conditioner bars is that, without sounding silly, their job is to condition, not coat! So many conditioners (especially bottled), are created to give you a nice shiny result after washing, with silky smooth hair and a lustrous shine, so, why does your hair seem to get greasy in the next few days? Unless your hair is naturally oily, your hair should not look or feel greasy within 24 hours if it’s well nourished and looked after. This due to the silicones found in the conditioner.
Expanding more on what silicones do to the hair: Silicones obstruct moisture from penetrating the hair shaft, which attracts dirt that accumulates as product buildup. This buildup weighs down hair, making it feel lifeless and dull. By switching to KinKind, our nourishing ingredients will penetrate through to the hair fibre, giving you a sensational shine and gloss.
"When used correctly, a conditioner bar should not leave any residue. Proper rinsing is key. Make sure you work the product into your hair thoroughly and rinse until the water runs clear."
6. Belief: You Need To Wash Your Hair Every Day
Not exactly true! If you need to wash your hair every day, that’s not always due to your hair being ‘naturally’ greasy, and instead, most likely due to product build-up. Sure, some people do have very oily hair, but if we continuously use silicone-heavy shampoos and conditioners, there’s a big possibility that we’re adding more chemicals into our hair than we are washing out of it. This can actually lead us to misjudge our hair type, where we believe we have much oilier hair than we actually do, which can lead us to using the completely wrong products and even making our hair condition worse.
KinKinds’ shampoo and conditioner bars are formulated to gently and effectively cleanse your hair and scalp without stripping away your natural oils and allowing your scalp's natural balance to reset. Plus, our formulas are highly concentrated (unlike bottled shampoos and conditioners), so you use less shampoo and more time between washes.
"Over-washing leads to breakage and damage over time. Plus, you could end up drying your hair out if you use too much product too frequently"
7. Belief: More Lather Means Better Cleaning
Myth! Okay, we’re going to have to get a little scientific here and explain a key ingredient in most bottled shampoos. For shampoo to actually clean your hair, it needs to contain ‘surfactants’. Surfactants lift the dirt from your hair, break down oil and grease and create that lather texture. So, when there are harsh or intense surfactants in the shampoo, it creates a rich, thick lather that can be mistaken for ‘cleaning’ your hair, but actually it’s stripping it of what it needs! This is what can give your hair a plastic, squeaky feeling after you’ve washed it.
KinKind shampoo bars use much gentler cleansing agents that still foam nicely, but without the harsh additives that can strip your hair or leave it in need of moisture and further care. Better yet, the concentrated formula of the shampoo bars means you’ll get a great lather and fully clean hair with just a small amount.
8. Belief: Shampoo Bars Are Only For Certain Hair Types
Not at all! Just like the thousands of varieties of bottled shampoos out there, many variations of shampoo bars also cater to the wide variety of hair types. The great thing about solid shampoo bars is that, unlike many bottled shampoos that are just formulated for their smell, these are formulated for specific hair types. Each ingredient is especially selected to clean and nourish the hair and scalp, whether it be dry, oily, thin or flaky, there is a shampoo bar out there that’s perfect for you.
Kinkind believe that your hair shouldn't have to suffer to find the right shampoo bar for you, so that’s why we’ve specified each formula to suit very real hair needs, such as out Strength! bar for thinning hair, or Clear my head! for flaky scalps, and plenty more products that will keep your hair clean, shiny, and chemical-free!
9. Belief: Solid Bars Are Less Hygienic
Not true! Some people believe that just because solid shampoo and conditioner bars are handled directly, it somehow makes them less hygienic than bottled products. This is totally untrue, due to all solid bars being formulated to be naturally self-preserving, meaning they don’t need to sit in water packaging, they don’t require any form of packaging, and more importantly, they don’t need any pesky preservatives inside to stay stable.
Kinkind solid bars are designed to be as long-lasting as possible without any unnecessary additives. All your bar needs is a decent, well-draining dish where it can be left to try between uses. Take good care of it, and you’ll never have to worry about it being safe to use or not.
10. Belief: Sustainable Haircare Means Compromising On Results
Absolutely not! There is a lingering belief that if you opt for natural or eco-friendly cosmetics, they will be less effective, but that’s just not the case. In fact, many conventional bottled formulas contain high amounts of excess water, fillers, and unnecessary ingredients, and cut back on genuinely helpful ingredients that contribute to healthy hair.
KinKind shampoo and conditioner bars are made with a highly concentrated formula, are water-free and packed with nourishing ingredients like plant oils, butters and targeted actives designed for your specific hair needs. Also, we make sure all our bars are silicone-free so as not coat your hair, and you can maintain the natural shine and softness you see comes from real haircare.
